What is key cloning?

What is key cloning?
Cloning a key is a process where a key cutter (hardware store or locksmith) uses a special machine to match the code on your existing/working key to a new one that you are having programmed.  They will basically insert your old (working) key into their special programming (cloning) machine and it will generate the code to cut and program your new key.
This “cloning” type programming method does not always work.  Automotive Manufacturers are getting smarter and are changing the type of transponder chips that are in the keys, making it more difficult to have a key programmed anywhere but at the dealership.
